What is Carpal Tunnel in Chicago?
If you work on the computer all day, you're putting yourself at risk for a condition known as carpal tunnel. The condition causes a great deal of pain and discomfort. However, if you seek treatment from a chiropractor in Chicago at ReAlign Chiropractic you can reduce pain and possibly prevent surgery in the future.
What is Carpal Tunnel?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that arises when the nerve, known as the median nerve, is compressed. This nerve rests in the carpal tunnel and runs from your forearm throughout the passage of your wrist. This particular nerve is responsible for the sensation in your thumb and all fingers except the little finger. It also supplies the thumb with its motor function.
Causes of Carpal Tunnel
The nerve may become compressed as a result of holding your wrist in an upright position for prolonged periods of time. This is particularly a concern if you work on the computer. When you hold your wrist in that position for prolonged periods of time, it irritates the area and causes it to swell, which places pressure on the nerve. Carpal tunnel may also be the result of an injury, too.
Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel causes a number of nerve symptoms such as tingling and numbness in your hand that could extend up your arm. You might feel as though an electric shock is going up your fingers. The symptoms might arise when you're driving or holding an object up in the air. In some cases, carpal tunnel symptoms will interfere with your sleep. Weakness is also a common symptom. You might notice you have weakness in your hand, and you drop objects frequently.
Chiropractic Treatment for Carpal Tunnel
We may advise you to do a series of exercises in our office and at home. These exercises will increase in difficulty as your condition improves. This treatment helps the blood flow throughout the area, which works to alleviate some of your nerve symptoms. We will also fit you for a splint to wear, usually while you sleep. Cold therapy or massage therapy which can reduce the swelling around the median nerve might be applied by our Chicago chiropractor. These help to loosen up muscles that could be causing nerve compression.
