What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractors are typically thought of as “back doctors,” but that isn’t really the whole story. In fact, a chiropractor is more a “nervous system doctor” than a back doctor and that is something we’ve been trying to explain to the public for quite some time.
Anatomy of the Nervous System
Your nervous system is an intricate, complex, extensive communication system that begins in your brain and runs through your entire body via the spinal cord and nerves. It is your nervous system that connects all the parts of your body with your brain as the hub. It is what allows you to move, control certain bodily functions, and even feel pain. It is quite impressive when you think about it.
The spine, or spinal column as it is often called, houses the spinal cord which is the primary component of your nervous system. When your spine is healthy, moving and functioning properly, the spinal cord and nervous system are protected allowing your body to work the way it should. When your nervous system is in proper working order, all the parts are able to effectively and efficiently communicate with each other. All is well.
Spinal Injury or Misalignment
If there is a problem, an illness, injury, or even aging, causing the spine to become unhealthy or misaligned (one or more of the vertebrae shift from their normal position) it can cause problems including pain, lack of mobility, loss of flexibility, and other physical problems. This causes the body to become impaired, not working the way that it should. This happens because the pathways for the signals from the brain have become blocked or injured.
It’s much like your cell phone dropping a call or hearing static on the line and being unable to hear the message. If your phone reception is impaired you don’t get calls. How can you pick up milk on the way home if you can’t hear the directions?
And how can your legs know to respond a certain way if they aren’t receiving the message from your brain? The signal is messed up and you are left dealing with a body that doesn’t always do what you want it to do.
It doesn’t have to be that way though. We can help.
How Chiropractic Care can Help
Chiropractic care looks at your health is a different way – more from the inside out. It treats the whole patient in a way that is natural, non-invasive, and medication free, getting to the root of the problem instead of just treating symptoms. Your chiropractor may make dietary suggestions, recommend supplements, and suggest other therapies as part of your treatment.
Chiropractic has worked for a number of people to help relieve their pain, restore mobility and flexibility, and improve their quality of life. It just might work for you.
